Student Centered Coaching: Content-Focused Certificate

These courses are open to current, previous, and prospective Coaching Certificate participants.

Our student-centered coaching courses take a practice-oriented approach to the work of coaching that applies broadly across content areas. The Content-Focused courses allow participants to zoom in on a particular content-area for deeper exploration around standards and learning targets, the alignment and design of formative assessments, and how to analyze student evidence in order to make next instructional steps. These courses utilize the practices and structures of student-centered coaching, though you are not required to complete the Foundations course prior to enrollment.

Participants who complete the 4-course coaching series in addition to either the Math or Literacy Content-Focused course will receive a coaching certificate with this distinction.

Summer 2017 Offerings

Math-Focused Coaching course (July 9 - August 13)

In this asynchronous course, participants will ​apply the student-centered coaching model to mathematics coaching. For participants who have not taken Foundations of Student-Centered Coaching, this course will also serve as a brief introduction to the seven essential practices of that coaching model. All participants will extend and apply those essential practices to mathematics, focusing on connecting to current expectations of K-12 mathematics instruction.

Assignments will engage participants in discussion, analysis, and reflection on the practices andin applying key concepts to their own contexts. Participants will collaborate in online Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). Participants will also develop mathematics coaching resources for the specific professional needs of their sites.

This course has three central areas of focus:

3. Sharing experiences and resources to support one another in developing specific plans for the school year.

Because of an outreach grant, we are able to offer this certificate program at the reduced cost of $600 per non-credit course. Each course can also be taken for 3 UW-Madison credits at the total cost of $1,000 per course. For more information please contact ​Gwyneth Hughes at ghughes2@wisc.edu.
