Facilitating Self-Advocacy
Self-advocacy is integral to the life-long success of students with disabilities. Self-advocacy training is a critical element that assists students in making a smooth transition from high school to post-secondary education. This course prepares special education professionals to teach a competency-based curriculum in self-advocacy for students with disabilities, using the Becoming a Self-Advocate curriculum. Held online, this course also includes both online and hard copy access to the Becoming a Self-Advocate student curriculum.
Participants in this course will: - Characterize the key elements of the curriculum and their purpose
- Define the importance of becoming a self advocate
- Facilitate the awareness of internal and external factors affecting for students with disabilities when making career decisions
- Comprehend federal and state laws pertaining to individuals with disabilities
- Facilitate the awareness of factors that may influence postsecondary options for students with disabilities
- Facilitate the research of employment related resources
- Identify accommodation and disclosure processes
- Research self advocacy agencies and support groups
