GMWP hosting, ‘From High School to College: Engaging in Writing Dialogue’

January 30, 2015

The Greater Madison Writing Project is hosting a symposium on Friday, Jan. 30, at UW-Madison that’s designed to give high school English teachers and their college counterparts an opportunity to talk about concerns, common practices and shared goals.

“Events like this foster collaborative conversations across grade levels,” says Mark Dziedzic, the director of the Greater Madison Writing Project and an outreach specialist with the School of Education’s office of Education Outreach & Partnerships. It is not often that high school teachers and college instructors actually get the time to talk to one another about the writing standards, expectations and teaching practice at the various levels. There are critical components to being a ‘college ready’ writer that are not encompassed in the standards, and this is a chance for educators at all levels to discuss what those components are and how we might all better prepare our students for success as writers.”

GMWP logoThe event, titled “From High School to College: Engaging in Writing Dialogue,” runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Education Building’s Wisconsin Idea Room.

Caroline Levine, chair of UW-Madison’s English Department, and Beth Giles, the assistant dean for outreach in the School of Education, will kick off the event by welcoming participants.

The symposium will then include a series of panel discussions featuring educators from K-12 districts in Wisconsin, two-year colleges and universities, and UW-Madison.

Topics of discussion include: Standards and Learning Outcomes: What Guides My Teaching of Writing; Assessment & Feedback: Meaningful, Useful, Timely and Doable; and Teaching Writing: What do We Teach When We Teach Writing?

The Greater Madison Writing Project (GMWP) is a joint effort between UW-Madison’s School of Education and the College of Letters & Science. This local endeavor is an affiliate of National Writing Project (NWP) network.

In addition to GMWP, Friday’s event is being co-sponsored by the Department of English and the office of Education Outreach and Partnerships within the School of Education.
