Fox affiliate in Green Bay highlights ‘Wise Guys’

February 09, 2014

WLUK-TV, the Fox affiliate in Green Bay. produced a report about the “Wise Guys” and “Wiser Guys” programs at Clintonville (Wis.) Middle School.

Wise Guys reportThe “Wise Guys” program was developed by Justin Zoellick, who teaches fifth grade at Clintonville Middle School. The club is an after-school program that was started in 2012 to expose middle school boys to new activities and opportunities. Members of the community work with the Wise Guys on activities that have included knot tying, baking, fly fishing, trap shooting, photography, science experiments, ice fishing, team building and farming, among others. In addition to community members volunteering their time, local businesses have also been partners, providing tours of their facilities and teaching middle schoolers about their products and services.

In January, the Wise Guys program received a Standing Up for Rural Wisconsin Award from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

This program grew out of a collaborative initiative between some rural Wisconsin school districts and an outreach unit within UW-Madison’s School of Education.  For the past four years, the rural Wisconsin school districts of Clintonville, Marion, Tigerton and Wittenberg-Birnamwood have worked hand-in-hand with Education Outreach and Partnerships (EOP) on an initiative known as RECESS, which is an acronym for Rural Educators Collaborating to Enhance Student Success.
